Our General English courses are designed to improve every aspect of your English. Each lesson has clear objectives that contribute to your overall progress and move you closer to achieving your language goals.

In every class, your teacher will provide you with structured learning tasks and monitor your progress, providing you with feedback to help you become more fluent and more confident communicating in English.

THE RIGHT LEVEL FOR YOU

We offer General English courses, which will improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills as well as your grammar and vocabulary. These courses are from Beginner level to Upper Intermediate.

If you are new to the British Council, you will need to take a placement test to find out which level is right for you.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED? 

We measure your progress using continuous assessment.

We do this to help you understand what your strengths are and where there is room for improvement. We also measure your progress to see if you are ready to move on to the next General English level.

All continuous assessment is based on practical can do tasks.

Course Information 

What:

Starter, elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper-intermediate, pre-advance

How long:

60 hours over ten weeks

How much:

5850 ETB and 1150 ETB for course Book 

All payments over 500 ETB must be made by a direct bank transfer to our bank account (see the instructions here) or through cash payment order (CPO) made out to British Council from any branch of the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia. You must pay for your course in full in order to reserve your place.  Please note that from Monday to Friday after 5:00 pm and on Saturdays, we will not conduct any financial transactions such as issuing receipts, cheques and receiving payments.

Course duration

Morning classes are scheduled twice a week (3-hour lessons) and afternoon and evening classes three times a week (2-hour lessons).  

Afternoon and evening (extensive) course

General English three days per week  22 November - 5 February 

Monday, Wednesday and Friday - 16.15 - 18.15 or 18.30 - 20.30 

or

Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday - 16.15 - 18.15 or 18.30 - 20.30 

General English two days per week  22 November - 5 February 

Monday and Wednesday - 9:15 am – 12:15 am

or

Tuesday and Thursday - 9:15 am – 12:15 am

Placement Test

If you are a new student, you will need to take a placement test so that we can place you at the right level. 

What:

Placement test covers grammar, vocabulary, reading and speaking  

When:

Every Wednesday and Friday (13.00 - 14.30) 

Every Saturday (10.00 - 12.30)

How long:

90 minutes

How much:

300 ETB

You can apply for a full refund or transfer before the start date of your course, minus an administrative fee of 585 ETB. No refunds or transfers are available after the course start date, apart from in exceptional circumstances as agreed by teaching management e.g. a medical emergency. Refunds / Transfer Policy

Occasionally, the British Council may have to cancel a class just before it starts due to unforeseen circumstances. If this happens we will transfer your payment to an alternative or future course. If this is not possible we will provide a full refund.

No refunds or transfers will be issued after the first day of the course.
